BVTV Student News Team earns honors in STN and JEMKC competitions

In the closing months of the 2006-07 school year, the Student News Team of BVTV18 earned notable awards.

In the STN (Student Television Network) 2007 Spring Nationals competition, the Student News Team earned first place for their production of Good Morning, Blue Valley in the Weekly Show category.   In the Human Interest / Feature category, BV West senior Courtney Bullis, Blue Valley High senior Scott Simpson and BV North senior Greg Dubinsky earned third place for their story about a student from Sierra Leone who is thriving as a Morse Elementary student.   Currently there are approximately 475 schools that are members of the STN.

Awards were recently announced by JEMKC (Journalism Educators of Metropolitan Kansas City) in their 2007 competition.  In the News Feature Story category, first place honors were awarded to BV West senior Kayte Steinmetz and Blue Valley High senior Sam Frickleton about Olga, a Belarusian-born child growing up in America.  Second place honors in the Sports Feature Story category were bestowed on BV West senior Hannah Pederson and BV North senior Phil Nohe for their story about a BV North student who returned to the football field after overcoming serious health issues.  The Student News Team earned second place honors in the Newscast category for their production of Good Morning, Blue Valley.

The BVTV Student News Team learn the advanced skills necessary as reporters and operators of studio and field equipment through hands-on training and practical application. Student productions include a one-hour live weekly news show, Good Morning, Blue Valley . Blueprints , a news magazine, incorporates feature stories about the programs and people within the schools.
