Student News Team earns honors from KAB

The Blue Valley Schools Student News Team earned many top honors in the 2007 Kansas Association of Broadcasters (KAB) Student Broadcast Awards competition.

The team earned first place in the Complete Newscast category for Good Morning Blue Valley . This edition included sports and weather segments in addition to news and feature stories.

In the Complete Sports Feature category, BV West senior Hannah Pederson and BV North senior Phil Nohe earned first place for their story about a BV North junior who overcame a health issue and became a leader on the Mustangs football team.

BV West seniors Courtney Bullis, Laura Licata and Blue Valley High senior Sam Frickleton won second place in the Complete News Feature category.  Their story told of a youngster from Sierra Leone who survived a brutal attack and is now thriving in the United States.

The same trio also earned second place in the Hard News Package category for reporting on the Parents as Teachers program that teaches babies and toddlers to use sign language as a communication tool.

Members of the BVTV Student News Team learn the advanced skills necessary as reporters and operators of studio and field equipment through hands-on training and practical application. Student productions include a one-hour live weekly news show, Good Morning, Blue Valley. Blueprints, a newsmagazine, incorporates feature stories about the programs and people within the schools.  A sports show, It's Game Time, offers highlights of Varsity athletic contests involving Blue Valley high schools.  Adviser for the Student News Team is Bruce McRoberts.
