BVTV18 Student News Team earns national recognition

The 2003-04 Student News Team has once again earned national recognition for their work in broadcast journalism.  The results of the 2004 NSPA (National Scholastic Press Association) Broadcast Story of the Year competition were announced recently.  The awards will be given out at the JEA / NSPA National Convention in Atlanta in November 2004.

First place honors for Broadcast News Story were awarded to Blue Valley West graduate Lara Wilinsky and Blue Valley High grad Matt Hayward.  Their topic focused on the Speak Out for Stephanie Foundation, a local organization which has changed laws after a horrible tragedy. This story also won a Student Emmy last spring in Los Angeles.

A regional golf meet sideline report won third place honors in the Broadcast Sports category. Blue Valley West graduate Matt Baysinger and Blue Valley Northwest alum Chris Pearson teamed up to bring highlights of this meet which determines qualifiers to the state golf tournament.

Blue Valley North graduates Britni Benage and Ally Hamacher teamed up with BVNW grad Chris Pearson to tell the story of a walking miracle, a youngster who is excelling with the help of family and district personnel.  Their entry won third place honors in the Broadcast Feature category.

Members of the BVTV Student News Team learn the advanced skills necessary as reporters and operators of studio and field equipment through hands-on training and practical application. Student productions include a one-hour live weekly news show, Good Morning, Blue Valley. Blueprints , a newsmagazine, incorporates feature stories about the programs and people within the schools.  Adviser for the Student News Team is Bruce McRoberts.
