BVTV students earn national recognition

 The National Television Academy has announced the national winners of the Student Television Award for Excellence recognizing outstanding television journalism by high school students.   Two members of the Student News Team from BVTV18 were selected to receive one of six prestigious awards from a pool of 88 regional NTA chapter award-winners. 

Receiving the top award in the category of Public Affairs/Community Service/Public Service are senior Lara Wilinsky of
Blue Valley West High School and senior Matt Hayward of Blue Valley High School.  They teamed up to produce the story about S.O.S. - Speak Out for Stephanie, an organization founded by the parents of a murdered Blue Valley North graduate to raise public awareness and change sexual predator laws in the state of Kansas.

The national winners were chosen by a blue ribbon panel consisting of sixteen Emmy Award winners.

The 2004 National winners will be presented their awards at the National Television Academy Trustees Award Dinner on June 3 in Los Angeles.  The winners will receive their award from Norman Pearlstine, Editor-in-Chief, Time Inc. and Barry Meyer, Chairman and CEO, Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.  The Time Warner Foundation is the sponsor of the Student Television Award for Excellence.

Other national winners are: 
Hillcrest High School, Springfield MO; Convent of the Sacred Heart, Greenwich CT; Germantown High School, Germantown, TN; Lawrence Central High School, Indianapolis IN; and James Hubert Blake High School, Silver Spring MD.
